Prestige Proof Set...my first jaunt into proofs

The 1987 set is the 200 year commemorative of the Constitution. It features a constitution silver dollar, and proof Kennedy half, quarter, dime, nickel, and penny. I bought the set from my dealer for $33, no tax.

I thought that it would be nice to have, given how much I love RP's campaign platform. I'll be adding the 1993 bill of rights set soon.

When and what kind of numismatic appreciation might I expect (barring a complete collapse of society the MRE crowd likes to propagate)?

There was a $5 gold minted in 1987 for the Constitution bicentennial.

8.359 grams, .900 gold, .242 troy ounce actual gold weight

Does anyone know of websites that show the value of commemorative issues like these? I would like to see what dealers are willing to pay to purchase these items. Thanks. :coolbeer:

cool. APMEX has some pics of the 1987 gold constitution coin.

the price has approximately doubled since I bought it.

The prestige proof set hasn't gone up much in 20 years. That dollar coin is really nice, though.

Maranatha,

APMEX has a great listing of retail prices (that we can buy from them), but it does not show wholesale prices (at which we could sell to them) like it does with bullion items. I would like to see a source that shows what prices they will pay to buy the items. That listing of wholesale prices that a dealer will pay to buy would make it much easier to decide about the real value of the items than the retail prices that dealers want to sell at. Since I am not really interested in selling, I don't want to waste APMEX's time by asking hypothetical questions about their buy prices, but I would like to see a website that lists a dealer's buy prices. :coolbeer:

I've looked at a lot of sites, this is all I could find:

My only other suggestions would be to call local dealers and/or do your own homework.

Maranatha,

Thanks for the link. Taber coins sounds interesting, and I may take them up on their offer of a free quote for purchasing stuff. Meanwhile, I will assume that a little lower than APMEX sell prices is a reasonable guess at what the items could be sold for to dealers. I'll also check eBay occasionally to see how high the bidders are pushing up their purchase prices to. :coolbeer:

If you go to a coin show and ask some dealers, they will probably pull out a recent greysheet and look it up.

Greysheet want to be paid for their research so it isn't available free online.

Yes, the Grey Sheet seems to be the industry standard. I don't subscribe to it anymore due to the cost but I still buy an issue online every once in a while to refer to. A lot of dealers around here will only pay 10% back of bid for some items. I think it depends on what it is and if they have a demand for it.

I picked up a few of those sets as well as the 1991 Mount Rushmore sets back when they were about $170 or so. Nice sets, considered them the first ones I'd sell in a crunch!
